The Eugene Gleemen
Celebrating 100 Years
The Longest Continuous Men's Chorus West of the Mississippi
The Spark of 1926
On January 14, 1926, a few men met in the Eugene Chamber of Commerce rooms to organize a chorus that would share the joy of song with the community. Within a single week, their numbers swelled to 20. Originally organized by George McMorran and the Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions clubs, they adopted the name "Gleemen" from the famed Bristol Gleemen of England. On January 26th, 1926 - the Eugene Gleemen name was adopted.
Despite early financial struggles and the Great Depression, the group persisted, fueled by a singular motto: "For the Sheer Joy of Singing."

"The Gleemen put character and vitality into our big civic gatherings... they convey the spirit of Eugene better than a battery of speakers." — The Guard, 1927
A Tradition on the Trail
Under the visionary direction of John Stark Evans (1928–1944), the Gleemen became a regional powerhouse. They represented the State of Oregon at the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair and were heard across the nation on KORE and NBC radio broadcasts. The Gleemen were a prominent part of "Oregon Day" at the fair, performing as official representatives of the state
Every performance for nearly 50 years has concluded with "The Oregon Trail," a song written specifically for the group. In the mid-20th century, the Gleemen's National Anthem was the signature "bedtime" signal for local TV viewers as the broadcast day ended.

Pillars of the Community
The Gleemen's impact extends far beyond the stage. From raising over $25,000 for the Shriners' Hospital to supporting local school music programs, service is in their DNA. In 2024, they dedicated the new Eugene YMCA, exactly 60 years after they dedicated the original building in 1964.
Today, led by Dr. John Jantzi, you can find them in their signature yellow or green shirts belting the National Anthem at Eugene Emeralds games or caroling through retirement communities during the holidays.
